Geo-Microbial Technologies, Inc. (GMT) celebrated its 20th year of business in 2005, and has now begin its third decade of service. During this time, GMT has become one of the leading providers of surface geochemical data and interpretations to the oil and gas industry worldwide. GMT crews have acquired hydrocarbon microseepage data throughout the world in geologically and environmentally diverse settings ranging from the tropics to the arctic, from deserts to jungles and grasslands. Some of these surveys have been reconnaissance surveys in remote and/or underexplored basins; most have been conducted to high-grade previously defined leads and prospects on the basis of likely hydrocarbon charge; and a growing number of surveys have taken place in and near mature fields to aid in the search for by-passed pay, or other unexploited reserves. GMT’s headquarters are still in Ochelata, Oklahoma (near Tulsa), but today we also have offices or representation in Calgary, Quito, Buenos Aires, Paris, Islamabad, and China.

In the next several months, GMT will be conducting new geochemical surveys in Chad, Tunisia, and Sudan. GMT has previously conducted successful hydrocarbon microseepage surveys in Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Mozambique, and Madagascar. Some of these surveys were reconnaissance surveys, and others were designed to high-grade prospects on the basis of probable hydrocarbon charge. Both the microbial method and the sorbed soil gas method are effective in arid and semi-arid regions (but we recommend not sampling from sand dunes). Results from the Algeria survey documented that reliable microseepage data could be obtained from shallow soils and sediments, despite the presence of 200-400 meters of halite above the Triassic reservoirs. In Tunisia, both microbial and GORE samples were collected at the same sites in the exploration area, as well as over a number of analog wells (producing and dry). According to our client, both GORE and GMT correctly “classified” 5 of the 6 analog wells. In the exploration area, both GORE and GMT identified the same areas of elevated microseepage. The net result of this comparison of methods is that they yielded essentially the same conclusions, however, one method cost more than 5 times as much as the other!

GMT is now scheduling surveys for the second half of 2006. GMT crews have recently completed surveys in Algeria, Argentina, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Germany, Guyana, France, Pakistan, Peru, Canada, California, Nevada, Washington, Colorado, Nebraska, Illinois, Oklahoma, and Texas; new surveys are being planned for Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, Kentucky, Argentina, Belize, Tunisia, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Australia, Sudan, and Chad. Don’t wait until the last minute to schedule survey crews. We expect that the demand for our geochemical surveys and crews will continue to be high for the foreseeable future. If you will be acquiring 2-D or 3-D seismic data in the next few months, think seriously about acquiring hydrocarbon microseepage data at the same time. Wells drilled on prospects associated with positive geochemical anomalies are 4 to 6 times more likely to result in a commercial discovery than prospects without an associated microseepage anomaly. Don’t just identify traps and reservoirs; identify the traps and reservoirs most likely to contain significant volumes of oil and gas.
